SPECIAL MASTIC |
|
Special mastic is a blend
of bitumen and graded acid-resistant fillers. It consists of Special
Mastic Primer and Special Mastic Mortar and supplied in cake form. The
advantage of this product is that it can be used at a higher temperature
compared to other mastic and can be used on vertical surface for any
height without use of chicken mesh as reinforcement.
|
|

|
Use |
|
Special Mastic is used as an exposed
lining on floors where traffic is medium or non-existent and chemical
spillages are expected up to 60º C. It is used as an impervious underly
menbrane on floors, channel lining, sumps etc., which are constructed
out of concrete over which acid proof tile / brick lining is provided.
It can also be used as an underly membrane inside tank holding liquids
where mechanical abuses and spillages at higher temperatures are
expected.
It is used in different industries like Steel and Pickling, Dyestuff,
Rayon, Food, Defence, Automobiles, Chloroalkali, Petroleum Industries
etc.

Directions
for Use |
|
|
Surface
Preparation : |
|
The
Concrete floor should have a minimum of 1-2% slope
to ensure draining of spilled liquids. On vertical
surfaces, if the height of the wall is more than 3
meters, it is recommended to have V-grooves at an
interval of 2 meters for good anchoring purpose. applied
on the dry, even, concrete before application of Special
Mastic. |

|
Special
Mastic Application : |
|
Special
Mastic system comprises of Special Mastic Primer followed
by Special Mastic Mortar. Recommended minimum thickness
of Special Mastic Primer and Special Mastic Mortar
is 4 mm and 16 mm respectively. In other words, the
total thickness of entire system should be atleast
20 mm. This would ensure to achieve a membrane without
any pin hole or crack extending through the full thickness
of the membrane. The layers should have staggered
joints. |

|
Special
Mastic Primer : |
|
The
area is divided in to convenient number of bays. Wooden
reapers of thickness equal to the required mastic
thickness is fixed to maintain uniform thickness.
Special Mastic Primer is broken into small pieces
and placed in a tar / asphalt boiler and heated. To
prevent charring of the primer, the material is kept
in motion using a wooden plank. At a temperature of
180º - 200ºC, the primer will be in a molten condition.
Mastic is taken out from the boiler, poured over the
surface and spread to a uniform thickness using a
wooden float. The layer is spread as thin as possible
to minimize air or moisture entrapment. Special care
is taken to eliminate bubbles since these imperfections,
if not removed would continue through subsequent layers.
It is recommended that two primer layers are applied
each of 2 mm thickness. |
|
|
|
|
Special
Mastic Mortar : |
|
Mortar
cakes are broken into small pieces and heated at a
temperature of 200º - 240ºC, when the material attains
a butter like consistency. It is applied in one or
two layers over the primer and thoroughly worked on
till it formed a membrane. The covering should be
done piece by piece and care taken to maintain the
temperature so that a perfect weld is made. |
|

|
Chemical
Resistance |
|
Generally Special Mastic is
resistant to most inorganic acids of dilute and moderate concentration
and to alkalies. However, it is not resistant to oxidising acids like
Chromix and nitric and organic acids, solvents and oils. For individual
chemicals resistance, please contact us.
|
|

|
Packing |
|
Both primer and mortar are
packed in gunny bags of 30 kg each. However if one full truck load is
sent, then only one grade is packed in gunny bag for identification.
|
|

|
Transportation |
|
During transport, both
grades must be protected from direct exposure to heat.
|
|
|

|
Storage
& Shelf Life |
|
Both Special Mastic Primer
and Mortar are to be kept preferably in a shady place, away from heat.
Shelf life : 1 year when stored under shade at ambient temp.

Handling
Precautions |
|
Molten Mastic must be
handled carefully. To avoid direct contact with skin, it is essential to
wear hand gloves and gum boots.
